OTTAWA - Since 2017, Canada has refused to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) that calls for the comprehensive prohibition of nuclear weapons. The Second Meeting of States Parties to the TPNW is being held today and tomorrow (November 27-28) in New York City. Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada, is attending this conference as part of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) Parliamentarians for the TPNW delegation while the federal government again refuses to send a delegation.
“At a time when global diplomacy is increasingly threatened by conflicts and wars, I am proud to join my colleagues from around the world to advocate against nuclear weapons. These weapons pose an increasingly existential threat to humanity, with Russia openly floating the use of nukes in its war against Ukraine. The federal government claims to have an “unwavering” commitment to abolish nuclear weapons, but its refusal to participate in this crucial global forum speaks volumes. We must not sit on the sidelines any longer.”
