OTTAWA - The Green Party of
Canada Quebec wing is supporting the initiative of
a petition submitted to the National Assembly, asking
thatQuebec commit to the Kyoto Protocol, despite the federal
government’s abandonment of the international agreement. To sign this
petition open to all Canadian citizens, you must complete the form at the

Jean Cloutier, Chairman of the Quebec wing and regional
spokesperson for the Green Party of Canada, commented, “In the name of
future generations, all Quebecois should denounce Canada's decision to
pull out of Kyoto. Quebec can show leadership by re-committing
to the Kyoto Protocol. We ask, therefore, that
the Quebec government commit to meeting targets for reducing
greenhouse gas emissions to 6% below 1990 levels over the period from 2008
to 2012." The spokeperson for Quebec on the party’s shadow cabinet
Annie Durette, said, “I invite all Canadians to launch a petition in their
respective provincial legislatures demanding they respect Kyoto targets
for reducing emissions. All political parties should listen to the wishes
of citizens through offering such participatory democracy on important
environmentalissues."
“The Quebec government can join the many municipal governments who
are working to achieve the reductions in emissions that Canada promised
when we signed the Kyoto Protocol. This is a goal that Canadians want to
see achieved. Showing the international community that the federal
government’s actions do not represent the views of the whole country would
be a step forward in rescuing Canada’s reputation,” said Green Party of
Canada Leader Elizabeth May, Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf
Islands.
