Alberta Stays Progressive Conservative, Rejects Harper Conservative Option

OTTAWA - In an election where climate became an issue, the party speaking to climate skeptics was trounced - a clear indication that ignoring the environment does not win votes.  Candidates who made inappropriate homophobic and racist remarks were also rejected.

"Albertans chose the middle of the road instead veering right.  The federal government should take notice of these results," said Green Party of Canada Leader Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich-Gulf Islands. “We have just witnessed voter reaction to his extreme ‘tough on nature’ agenda – and even his home province rejects it."

"Many congratulations to the fledgling Evergreen party.  They worked very hard to bring green and sustainable messages to this election," said May.

The Progressive Conservative Party won 61 ridings with 44 percent of the popular vote. The Wildrose was limited to 17 seats with 34.5 percent of the vote. The Liberals and NDP each claimed four ridings.  "Obviously strategic voting came into play here as people tried to prevent a Wildrose government," said May.  "With proportional representation, people would feel freer to vote their true values."
