Green Convention to be held in BC this August

SIDNEY - The Saanich-Gulf Islands riding association is proud to host the 2012 Green Party Convention in Sidney, BC, on August 17-19th, 2012. The convention will be held at the beautiful Mary Winspear Centre.

“The Green Party Convention is a wonderful chance to for members to get together, discuss policy, hear inspiring speakers, and learn about campaigning,” said Green Leader Elizabeth May.  “I’m especially pleased to have the Convention in my home riding, welcoming Greens from all over Canada to this beautiful part of the country.”

The Greens, always willing to work with other parties, have invited Liberal Stéphane Dion to present his ideas on election reform, and Independent MP Bruce Hyer to speak about his experience in Parliament as an environmentalist. Author Ronald Wright will be discussing the film Surviving Progress, which was inspired by his best-selling book.

Fun is always part of the agenda, this year featuring a Gumboot Gala to give a flavour of the BC music scene to the delegates and an evening event with humourist Arthur Black, multiple winner of the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour.

Leader Elizabeth May will give the keynote Saturday evening.  “It is definitely interesting times in Canadian politics, and my first year as a Member of Parliament has been extremely gratifying.  The Green Party is a significant player on the political landscape.  I feel that I am making a difference, nationally and here at home.”

Greens have also shown themselves to be a force worldwide, with electoral success particularly in Europe.  The Convention will welcome International delegates to share how Greens have been effective around the globe.

“After a historic election in 2011, Greens have a lot to celebrate at our 2012 Convention. It will be a mixture of serious political discussions and fun as we come together as a community of people working for a smart economy, strong communities and true democracy,” said Convention organizer Marlene Wells.
