OTTAWA – On this the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the Green Party of Canada honours the memory of the more than forty-five thousand Canadians who gave their lives in defense of freedom, democracy and human rights during the Second World War.
On this day in 1944, fourteen thousand young Canadians stormed Juno Beach, where more than 340 lost their lives, and a further 574 were wounded.
“As the son of a World War II veteran who went to war for 4 long years and was wounded, I very much appreciate what our veterans went through to allow most of us the privilege of not having to go to war, and to live in a peaceful country – Let none of us forget," said Green Deputy Leader Bruce Hyer, MP for Thunder Bay–Superior North.
“We must always remember the incredible sacrifice of the Allied soldiers who fought against the forces of fascism and oppression,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands. “We owe it to them to defend our democracy, to speak out against prejudice and discrimination, and to work hard each day to build a more peaceful world.”
