Statement on Labour Day 2014

OTTAWA – On Labour Day, the Green Party of Canada reminds all Canadians of the achievements of the labour movement in this country and around the world, and the threats to workers’ rights that continue to this day.

“I want to wish all Canadians a safe and happy holiday weekend as we gather with friends and family to celebrate this last weekend of the summer,” stated Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and MP for Saanich Gulf Islands.

“Labour Day is an opportunity to reflect on how much the labour movement has accomplished for all Canadians, from workplace safety standards to parental leave,” added Green Party Deputy Leader Bruce Hyer, MP for Thunder Bay–Superior North. “This government’s ongoing hostility toward organized labour affects all of us, and it is our shared responsibility to ensure workers’ rights in this country are protected.”

“The Labour Movement has played an important role in creating a more just society for all Canadians," concluded Elizabeth May.

"The Harper Conservatives' heavy-handed back-to-work legislation, the disastrous Union Disclosure Bill, and the out-of-control expansion of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program have made it abundantly clear why we still need a strong labour movement in Canada. That’s why, as Leader of the Green Party, I will work with labour and business to put in place policies that lead to good jobs and a more resilient economy for the benefit of all Canadians.”
