(OTTAWA) - More than 500 people attended the launch of Green Party Leader Elizabeth May’s (Saanich – Gulf Islands) re-election campaign and fourth anniversary of being sworn in as Canada’s first elected Green MP, which raised over $15 000 in donations.
“I would like to thank everyone who attended yesterday’s celebration. Your support demonstrates the growing momentum for Greens in B.C. and throughout Canada,” said Ms. May.
Elizabeth May continued, “Four years ago, when I was first elected as the MP for Saanich – Gulf Islands, I promised to demonstrate to Canadians the difference that one Green MP can make. Since 2011, we’ve unanimously passed the first Green law, protected local jobs, attracted federal dollars to the riding, defended our coast, introduced numerous Green amendments to improve legislation, and raised the bar of decorum in Parliament.
“I am confident that with our excellent slate of Green candidates and the support of Canadians, we can elect more Greens.”
Bruce Hyer, Deputy Leader of the Green Party of Canada and MP (Thunder Bay – Superior North), continued:
“Four years ago, Saanich – Gulf Islands residents signaled, in record numbers, that they want to build a better Canada. Since I joined the Green Party in 2013, I am proud to have worked with Elizabeth May, dedicated volunteers, staff, candidates, and Green supporters.
“If two MPs can speak the truth, represent their constituents and accomplish this much, imagine what we will achieve with even more Green voices in Parliament!”
Arthur Black, author and comedian, hosted the event. Frances Litman, Green Party candidate (Esquimalt–Saanich–Sooke), along with BC Green Party leader Adam Olsen and BC Green MLA Andrew Weaver, joined Ms. May at the campaign launch.
