(OTTAWA) – On April 29, Ottawa residents concerned about Climate, Jobs and Justice will march from Laurier Avenue, in front of Ottawa City Hall, to the U.S. Embassy to coincide with the 100th day of the Trump administration. The march is one of over 300 happening in cities around the world, inspired by the historic People’s Climate Mobilization in Washington, D.C.
“On April 29, people will unite in Washington, DC, and our nation’s capital, Ottawa, to make our voices heard on climate, clean energy, jobs and social justice,” said Cherie Wong, Young Greens Co-Chair and march organizer. “Canadians remember all too well Stephen Harper’s assault on science and the environment. Now, we face a new challenge: Trump’s commitment to dismantle structures in the U.S. for climate action and environmental protection. We need to show that we stand with our neighbours and that we believe in the swift transition to a sustainable, clean energy economy.”
“We can no longer stay silent on infringement of basic human rights and freedom. This is about speaking up for people and our planet who do not have a voice. We stand together to resist fear-driven politics, to embrace diversity and inclusivity,” Ms. Wong said.
The march takes place in solidarity with communities most affected by the rolling back of hard-won protections for the climate; assaults on air, water and land; and direct attacks on working families, indigenous peoples, people of colour, immigrants, LGBTQIA+, women, youth, low-income communities, and many more marginalized groups. The mobilization is about bringing solutions to the table and targeting elected leaders to take bold action.
“While the Trump administration is making regressive changes to environmental and climate policies, Canada is still using Harper-era climate targets that don’t meet our Paris Agreement commitments,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands). “I encourage everyone to attend a climate march in their cities to show support for this powerful and inclusive movement.”
The People’s Climate Movement marches are being organized by a coalition of Indigenous communities, labour groups, environmental and social justice organizations.
