Statement for Hiroshima Nagasaki Day

(OTTAWA) – Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands), released the following statement:

"The mushroom cloud rose over Hiroshima on this day 72 years ago, and over Nagasaki three days later. The bombs caused the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki – it must never ever happen again.

The path to peace is not found through mutually assured destruction, but through a global ban on nuclear weapons. Canada must step up and join the over one hundred countries that have negotiated the treaty to ban the bomb. As Albert Einstein said, 'The splitting of the atom changed everything, except man's mode of thinking; and thus we drift toward unparalleled catastrophe.' It is time to change our mode of thinking. It is time to end the threat of nuclear war once and for all."
