(OTTAWA) – Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich – Gulf Islands), released the following statement:
“As a strong majority of British Columbians desire, the BC government is moving ahead with its promise to hold a referendum on adopting an electoral system of proportional representation (PR). The opportunity for British Columbians to finally do away with the archaic First-Past-the-Post system is exciting, and will serve as an example for other provinces – and the federal Liberals – to follow.
“Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a promise to Canadians that 2015 would be the last election under First Past the Post. He shattered that promise in spectacular fashion on Feb 1, 2017. If federal Liberals hoped the promise of electoral reform would be forgotten when Canadians go to the polls in 2019, a fall 2018 BC vote for proportional representation guarantees the issue will remain on the political agenda,” Ms. May said.
