Statement on United Nations Day

(OTTAWA) – Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands), released the following statement for United Nations (UN) Day:

“United Nations Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945. With the ratification of this founding document, the United Nations officially came into being.

“The UN is more necessary than ever to bring the world’s nations together. We face many challenges including widening conflicts and inequality, climate change and extreme weather, human rights abuses, and security threats including the failed elimination of nuclear weapons. The world’s problems transcend borders.

“Governments, businesses and civil society must continue to work together towards the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, including the Paris Agreement on climate change. Canada must set emissions targets that meet our Paris Agreement commitments.

On United Nations Day, we renew our commitment to improve the lives of people everywhere.
