A wind of change is blowing in Montreal

Montreal, November 6, 2017 – Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands) extends the party’s congratulations to Valérie Plante, Mayor-elect of Montreal, and to her team for their historic victory yesterday in the Quebec municipal elections.

“Seeing a progressive and environmental party like Projet Montreal get 52% of the votes is encouraging. I would like to congratulate the entire Valérie Plante campaign team, borough mayors and elected councilors,” Ms. May said.

She adds: “For the first time in its 375-year history, a woman will be mayor of Montreal. This result demonstrates a desire for change on the part of Montrealers and Quebecers. I also thank outgoing Mayor Denis Coderre for treating all Canadian political parties on an equal footing in the 2015 general election, and for his stand against Energy East.”

Daniel Green, GPC Deputy Leader, said: “I look forward to seeing a council led by Mayor Plante make its mark. Montrealers have sent a clear message that they want to see modern, progressive, environmental and people-oriented politics.”

The Green Party of Canada also wishes to congratulate its French vice-president and Quebec spokesperson, Joey Leckman, elected city Councillor in his hometown of Prévost, north of Montreal.

"I warmly congratulate my friend Joey for his campaign and his election as councillor in Prévost, where residents will quickly realize that they have elected an exceptional and dedicated person for their community,” Ms. May said.
