(OTTAWA) – The Green Party of Canada released the following statement in commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People:
“2017 is a milestone year for the Palestinian people, as it marks 70 years since the United Nations voted to partition Palestine,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands).
“While partitioning Palestine led to a crucial refuge for Jews fleeing violent persecution — particularly in the aftermath of the Holocaust, and with widespread antisemitism in Canada and around the world — it also resulted in the displacement and dispossession of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes and properties. The injustices that befell the Palestinian people leading up to and following this fateful time cannot be swept under the rug,” continued Ms. May.
“Canada has a moral obligation to defend human rights abroad. Pressure must urgently be brought to bear on the government of Benjamin Netanyahu if we wish to finally see a two-state solution, and genuine peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians,” Ms. May concluded.
