Time to wake up, Mr. Trudeau . . . this pipe dream is over

OTTAWA ‒ Green Party Leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands) says the Trudeau’s Liberals must now face reality, cut their losses and walk away from the Kinder Morgan pipeline project after the Federal Court of Appeal struck down the permit authorizing the project.

“It is now very clear that what First Nations leaders, environmental groups and the Green Party have said all along is true -- this climate-destroying pipeline expansion should never be built and it will never be built,” said Ms. May. “I call on the government to announce that it is abandoning its plan to buy the existing pipeline infrastructure and undertake the expansion project. It’s time to say enough.”

In rendering its decision, the court commented that in its review of the project, the government had failed to engage, dialogue meaningfully and grapple with the real concerns of the Indigenous peoples. It also made the critical error of failing to consider the increased tanker traffic the project would create and its impact on the area’s endangered Southern resident killer whales.

"The Prime Minister promised evidence-based decision making. But the Federal Court decision makes it clear, the National Energy Board report was so flawed it could not be used as the basis for any decision,” said Ms. May.

“Mr. Trudeau was warned the report and the NEB process could not be the basis of any decision. In fact, he said so himself during the election campaign, Now it is clear. Cancel and walk away."
