OTTAWA — Green Party Leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands), released the following statement:
Today, exactly 100 years since the signing of the armistice that ended World War I, the Green Party joins Canadians from coast to coast to coast in honouring the Veterans who have served our country through times of war, conflict and peace.
As we lay wreaths at cenotaphs, pin a poppy over our hearts, and observe a minute’s silence at 11 a.m., we pay tribute to the contributions of countless men, women and families, thank them for their service and reaffirm our commitment to provide better health and well-being benefits and programs for Veterans and their families.
As that armistice was achieved 100 years ago, the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa were being rebuilt. It was suggested the central tower be named the "War Tower." Fortunately, it was named the Peace Tower as a reminder that we should make war no more.
A century after the "war to end all wars", and in the spirit of peace, courage and Canadian values, we recommit ourselves to improved Veteran care and peace in our world.
