Following the horrific Islamophobic attack last week in London, Ontario, Green Party supports the National Council of Canadian Muslim’s call for a national summit

OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada supports the National Council of Canadian Muslims calling for a national summit to address the rise of Islamophobia in Canada and is ready to host such an event.

“Canada has seen a steady rise in Islamophobia this past year, and we need concrete action to address this now,” said Green Party Leader Annamie Paul. “Therefore, we support the National Council of Canadian Muslims who are calling on all levels of government across the country - federal, provincial, territorial and municipal - to come together to take immediate action to dismantle all forms of Islamophobia and convene a National Action Summit on Islamophobia.

“Doctrines of racial and religious supremacy are an ongoing threat in Canada and we agree on the need to take immediate action to ensure we dismantle both violent forms of Islamophobia and systemic Islamophobia. The Green Party would be willing to host such a summit and we will reach out to the National Council of Canadian Muslims and other members of the Muslim community to offer our support.

A petition has been launched by the National Council of Canadian Muslims calling for a National Action Summit.

Ms. Paul concluded that hate cannot win, and every person in Canada must feel safe in their identity. “Even as we mourn, we renew our commitment to working to make that a reality,” she said.
