(OTTAWA) – Statement by Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and candidate in Saanich – Gulf Islands, following the pardon granted to Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy:
“I am relieved by the decision of Egyptian President el-Sisi to grant a pardon to Mohamed Fahmy. However, he should have never been sentenced in the first place. Many Canadians, including myself, had called upon Stephen Harper to act in support of an innocent Canadian citizen who has been wrongly imprisoned for more than a year. His failure to do so prolonged Mr. Fahmy’s hardship.”
“This must be a relief for Mr. Fahmy and his family,” continued May. “They have been through a terrible ordeal and now they can focus on Mr. Fahmy’s safe return to Canada.”
