(OTTAWA) – The Green Party of Canada released the following statement on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women:
“As Canadians, we pride ourselves on the belief that all people are equal, regardless of sex, colour, culture or creed. Unfortunately, acts of violence against women persist both at home and internationally,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands). "The culture that permits violence starts with a culture that permits sexism and misogyny. It is not a matter of being 'politically-correct' to denounce rape culture and objectification of women. it is a matter of respect for basic human dignity.”
Lorraine Rekmans, Indigenous Affairs Critic, said: “The Green Party of Canada continues to call for a national strategy to end violence against women, and all Canadians await the start of a national inquiry into the deaths and disappearances of Indigenous women. When men treat women as something lesser, both the women and then men who do so are diminished.”
Fran Hunt-Jinnouchi, GPC Status of Women Critic, said: “Today, I hope many classrooms across Canada explore the United Nations toolkit to support of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. It is unacceptable that an estimated one in three women are the victims of violence in their lifetime. We must challenge harmful norms and practices to break cycles of violence, and build access to safety for survivors of violence to enable them to speak out and rebuild their lives.”
