Statement for Earth Hour 2017

(OTTAWA) - The Green Party of Canada released the following statement to mark Earth Hour:

“Earth Hour reminds us that as individuals coming together, we can have a collective impact on the environment and energy consumption,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands). “The hard work to transition off fossil fuels and to renewable energy is still ahead of us, but today we show our solidarity towards these critical climate goals by sharing an hour in the dark.s

“Climate adaptation and the transition to clean energy needs to be understood as imminent. Even after leading the world in setting an ambitious target in the Paris Agreement, Canada is still lagging on real climate action. We can establish ourselves as a world leader in clean energy job creation, innovation and competitiveness. But it takes political will to get there.”

The World Wildlife Fund established Earth Hour to raise awareness about climate change. It was first officially recognized in Canada in 2008.
