(OTTAWA) — The Green Party of Canada released the following statement in observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which coincides with the liberation of the largest of the Nazi concentration and death camps — Auschwitz-Birkenau — on January 27, 1945:
“It is emotionally difficult but absolutely essential to remember the Holocaust and its many victims — the six million Jews, and the millions of others including ethnic Poles, Slavs, Roma, blacks, homosexuals, political dissidents, persons with mental or physical disabilities, and others who were killed by the Nazis and their collaborators,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands).
“The lesson we must take from this darkest of episodes in human history is that never again can humanity stay silent while people are being dehumanized or violently targeted. It is incumbent upon all of us to ensure that future generations continue to remember the Holocaust, and commit to a future that truly embraces the human family, with all of the diversity it encompasses,” concluded Ms. May
