OTTAWA — Today marks the 30th anniversary of the tragic events that took place at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal, when 13 female students and a female administrator were murdered because they were women. 30 years on, women and girls continue to be disproportionately targeted because of their gender.
“As we commemorate the victims of that heinous attack, let’s also remember that gender-based violence remains ubiquitous,” said Interim Green Party Leader Jo-Ann Roberts. “We must do more. We need to help communities explore concrete actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls in Canada, and around the world.”
“The staggering rates of violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people was clearly depicted in the final report from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). We must ensure that all 231 recommended steps are implemented as directed.”
“In order to confront misogyny in all its forms, it’s important to explore the root causes and address the cultural ideologies that encourage such views to flourish. There needs to be more accountability and transparency from social media organizations. The Green Party of Canada commits to educating the next generation on consent, respect and gender equality. We will work to make life safer for all women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people.”
