OTTAWA – Today, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we honour Dr. King as one of the incomparable civil rights giants whose shoulders we stand on.
Today is a day to both celebrate Dr. King’s towering legacy in the civil rights movement, and to reflect on how we can continue his fight for racial justice. While the historic election of our leader, Annamie Paul, as the first Black person to lead a major federal party in Canada is a sign of how far we have come, we look towards a time when there are fewer and fewer “firsts” for Black Canadians.
During a time when we are still grappling with a pandemic that has hit Black and racialized communities the hardest and that continues to expose the racial inequities that persist in Canada, we must not stop fighting for justice.
We honour Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today and continue to work towards a world that Dr. King and so many civil rights leaders in the United States and in Canada would be proud of.
