OTTAWA – On the occasion of this the 19th annual Black History Month in Canada, the Green Party of Canada would like to recognize the many important contributions of Canadians of African descent to all aspects of Canadian society.
“Black History Month is an important opportunity to celebrate the significant accomplishments of Black Canadians throughout our country’s history, and to recognize how much remains to be done to eliminate racism and discrimination in our society,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich–Gulf Islands.
The House of Commons first officially designated February as Black History Month in December 1995, following a motion introduced by the first black Canadian woman elected to Parliament, the Honourable Jean Augustine.
