Human rights activist, former journalist and deputy leader of the Green Party Jonathan Pedneault will be running in the upcoming by-election in the Montreal riding of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce-Westmount.
Born in Longueuil in 1990, Jonathan has dedicated his life to documenting and denouncing human rights violations and social inequalities in many conflict zones around the world. For 14 years, he has worked as a journalist and investigator for Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, notably in Africa, the Middle East and most recently in Ukraine, where he was also last month.
In many war zones, Jonathan witnessed the devastating effects of climate change before becoming deputy leader of the Green Party of Canada last year, following a joint leadership race with Elizabeth May.
"When the bond of trust is broken and abused, sometimes you have to do what Mr. Garneau did and look elsewhere. Justin Trudeau's status quo no longer holds water. Our world is in crisis and our country is divided. We need new, strong, unifying voices in Parliament to bring forward the innovative solutions that are needed," said Pedneault. "In the coming weeks, the electorate of NDG-Westmount will have the chance to change the face of this country, to give hope to youth from coast to coast and to send a clear message to Justin Trudeau: we are not satisfied, we do not feel heard, we deserve better and we know we are not the only ones who think so!"
Jonathan is running in NDG-Westmount because he knows that the riding wants to elect a representative with integrity and courage who is ready to bring change to the riding and to the country. His personal experience - from his long career in war zones to his advocacy for individual freedoms - and the unfortunate circumstances that forced the departure of Marc Garneau make him the ideal candidate for this diverse and dynamic riding.
"I am truly delighted that my Green Party of Canada leadership partner is entering the race to become the next MP for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce-Westmount," said Leader Elizabeth May. "With Jonathan Pedneault, the people of NDG Westmount will have a champion who will make a difference in Parliament and stand up for their interests.
In Parliament, Jonathan will fight to advance the issues that are important to the voters of NDG-Westmount, from the cost of living to fighting climate change to defending the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and minorities across the country. He will be a strong advocate for change and hopes to represent the interests of the riding in the House of Commons."
As with all Green MPs, Jonathan has a steadfast desire to protect the planet, our country and future generations from the devastating, ongoing effects of the climate crisis. He also has a deep commitment to representing his community and constituents, regardless of the political costs,“ said Kitchener Centre MP Mike Morris. “NDG Westmount residents have an opportunity to elect a representative that will always put people and planet ahead of politics. I’m looking forward to canvassing with Jonathan, and building the momentum needed to have him join Elizabeth and I in Parliament advocating for a better, fairer and greener future for all Canadians.”
