OTTAWA -- Bill C-389 amends the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code to include gender identity and gender expression. The Green Party of Canada urges all members of Parliament to vote in favour of sending this bill to committee.
The Green Party of Canada was, back in 1996, the first federal party to officially support same-sex civil marriage; we are pleased at the progress made on this issue. However, much prejudice and discrimination based on gender orientation remains. One important example: trans people are rarely even considered when legislation and public policies are developed.
Our vision is of a world free from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. We believe the passage of Bill C-389 will be an important step toward this goal.
