Statement by the Green Party of Canada - Black History Month

(OTTAWA) - February 2015 marks the 20th annual Black History Month in Canada. The Green Party of Canada honours the achievements made by black Canadians, while acknowledging that more still needs to be done to promote equality.

“Black History Month gives everyone a chance to reflect on the many accomplishments that black Canadians have made throughout history,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich – Gulf Islands. “The extraordinary literature, music, speeches, and films created by these individuals has helped shape our heritage.”

The House of Commons first officially designated February as Black History Month in December 1995.  It was proposed by the Honourable Jean Augustine, the first black Canadian woman elected to the House of Commons.

“Black History Month is also a moment to reflect on what we still need to do in our quest against racism,” concluded Ms. May. “Even today, minorities in Canada face various forms of discrimination.  Iconic figures in the civil rights movement, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, still teach everyone the lessons of respect, dignity, and love.”
