(OTTAWA) – The Green Party of Canada released the following statement to recognize Holodomor Memorial Day:
“The intentional starvation of up to 10-million Ukrainians in the winter of 1932-33 by Joseph Stalin’s Soviet regime will forever remain a horrific chapter in European history. Known today as Holodomor, the famine that led to the deaths of up to 25 percent of Ukraine’s population has since been recognized by Canada and more than 20 countries as an act of genocide,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands). “In the coming week, we join with Ukrainian-Canadians in commemorating those who lost their lives during Holodomor.”
Jeff Wheeldon, International Affairs Critic, said: “The Holodomor Memorial Day reminds us not only of the atrocities committed against the Ukrainian people, with whom we grieve in remembrance, but also that food security is an essential part of peace. Let's mark this day with a renewed commitment to ending starvation, to offering food as an act of peace rather than withholding it as a weapon of war."
Ukrainian settlement in Canada stretches back over 120 years, and today more than 1.25 million Canadians trace their family heritage to Ukraine.
