(OTTAWA) - Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands), released the following statement on Yom HaShoah, also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day:
“The lessons of the Holocaust must never be forgotten, particularly during a time when acts of antisemitism are on the rise in Canada and around the world. In remembering this horrible chapter in human history, we also recognize the tremendous contributions that Holocaust survivors have made to this country.
“This year marks the completion of Canada’s National Holocaust Monument, a memorial to the six million Jewish men, women and children, and others who were killed between 1933 and 1945 because of mental or physical disabilities, race, religion and sexual orientation. As Canadians, we rebuke hatred and fear, and embrace freedom, diversity, and human rights.
“We offer our thoughts and prayers to all those observing Yom HaShoah.”
On April 23, Ms. May attended the annual remembrance of Yom HaShoah at the Victoria Jewish Cemetary in Victoria, B.C.
