(OTTAWA) – Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (Saanich–Gulf Islands), issued the following statement on International Day of Democracy:
“On this day when we celebrate democracy, I mourn the loss of my fellow MP Arnold Chan, a fervent defender of our democratic institutions. Arnold’s poignant words, spoken only last June in the House of Commons, say it best: ‘We can disagree strongly, and in fact we should. That is what democracy is about. However, we should not just use the formulaic talking points. It does not elevate this place. It does not give Canadians confidence in what democracy truly means.’
“Arnold believed that listening was more important than talking – that this is when democracy really happens. As a Member of Parliament and a Green, I believe all MPs fundamentally work for their constituents, not for their political party. It is critical that we restore parliamentary democracy, bring in proportional representation, and work across party lines for the good of all Canadians.
“We must collectively guard against those who seek to tear down the institutions that strengthen and protect the freedoms we all enjoy. A functioning democracy is one in which all citizens have the right to express their views. Like Arnold, I remain hopeful we can return decorum and respect to the House, and that we can all take a moment to listen to our neighbours,” Ms. May concluded.
