(OTTAWA) --The Green Party of Canada remembers the hundreds of thousands of victims of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.
The bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki remind us that technological advancements must be accompanied with a commitment to vigilance and restraint. In solidarity with the Japanese-Canadian Nobel Peace Prize winner Setsuko Thurlow, who at the age of 13 stood a mile from the hypocentre of the blast in Hiroshima, the Green Party of Canada calls for the complete disarmament of nuclear arsenals and urges Prime Minister Trudeau to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons
It is estimated that 140,000 civilians were killed when President Truman ordered the dropping of a nuclear warhead on Hiroshima. Another 80,000 would perish three days later in the bombing of Nagasaki. This is especially horrific when all signs suggest the Allies had won the war and so making the bombings acts of hitherto unknown hubris.
