Statement on the second anniversary of the Quebec City mosque massacre

OTTAWA – Two years ago today, six men were murdered and 19 others were wounded when a gunman opened fire in a sanctuary where they had gathered to pray. The six dead are: Ibrahima Barry aged 39, Mamadou Tanou Barry aged 42, Khaled Belkacemi aged 60, Aboubaker Thabti aged 44, Abdelkrim Hassane aged 41 and Azzedine Soufiane aged 57.

Although Canada embraces ethnic and religious diversity, we are seeing an increase in xenophobic behaviour and intolerant rhetoric, often for partisan purposes. Immigrants are especially targeted. We must be aware of the link between these actions and those of the murderer’s that dark night of January 29, 2017.

The Green Party of Canada stands in solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters and especially with members of the Quebec City Muslim community as they continue to cope with the pain of their loss.

We wish you Salaam. Peace.
