OTTAWA -- The sighting of the new moon this evening will herald the beginning of Ramadan, a sacred observance that will continue for 30 days, ending at sundown on June 4 with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
“The holy month of Ramadan is an important spiritual observance for Muslims everywhere,” said Green Party Leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich Gulf-Islands). “This time of prayer, fasting and spiritual reflection is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, encouraging self-discipline and empathy towards those less fortunate.
“Canada’s vibrant tapestry of diversity enriches our society and underscores the importance of protecting religious freedom. An appreciation for each community’s spiritual traditions and cultural festivals helps deepen and strengthen the bonds between us.
“On behalf of the Green Party of Canada, I wish all Muslims peace and happiness during Ramadan. Ramadan Mubarak!”
