The Green Party Statement on Diwali

OTTAWA — Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights, celebrated every fall in the northern hemisphere. The festival of Diwali, which is marked by four days of festivities, is also an important religious celebration for Hindus, Jains and Sikhs. Diwali symbolises the spiritual victory of light over darkness. In the Hindu religion Diwali honours the return of Lord Rama in addition to honouring the goddess Lakshmi, Mother Kali and Ganesha.

“People across Canada and around the world observe this joyful festival by lighting candles and lamps,” said Green Party Leader Elizabeth May (Saanich-Gulf Islands). “Diwali can be a reflective time for celebrants, a time to give and forgive. A time to promote unity and cooperation. But it is also an opportunity for friends and families to gather together to share food, traditional sweets and delicacies. Wishing all a Happy Diwali.”
