Exactly one hundred years ago, the first official Armistice Day was observed throughout much of the Commonwealth and France. On the first anniversary of the end of the First World War, King George V held events at Buckingham Palace with silence at the stroke of 11 am. That tradition has carried on under the name Remembrance Day ever since 1931 when the federal government declared it so.
“Today I join with all Canadians to honour the immense sacrifices made by the men and women who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces,” said Interim Leader of the Green Party Jo-Ann Roberts. “Remembrance Day is a reminder of their service, and all that they have endured on our behalf at home and around the world. May we continue to strive for peace.
“Our Armed Forces continue to serve Canada both at home and abroad, in conflict zones and as peacekeepers. So as we observe a minute’s silence at 11. a.m., let’s remember the contributions that these men, women and their families continue to make. Let us recommit ourselves to improved care for veterans, their families and peace in our world.”
