Statement from Annamie Paul on the Conservative Party of Canada

TORONTO – "Through a variety of means, in ways both large and small, the Conservative Party of Canada has persisted in its efforts to undermine legislation to ban conversion therapy," said Leader of the Green Party of Canada, Annamie Paul.

”Conversion therapy is a cruel, demeaning and traumatic practice that seeks to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. During the 2020 Conservative leadership race, various candidates attacked plans to ban conversion therapy. Now, the leader of the Conservative Party will allow a free vote for its MPs on whether to support the legislation that would end this dangerous practice.

It is very disappointing to see a party that is so consistent in whipping votes, allowing MPs to vote freely against legislation that will protect vulnerable 2SLGBTQ+ people with impunity. In light of this most recent effort to stall the passing of this important legislation, our support needs to be even louder. Conversion therapy must end for good, and this legislation needs to be passed without delay."
