Green Party of Canada condemns military coup in Myanmar

OTTAWA  — The Green Party of Canada joins the Canadian government and other world democracies in condemning the military coup in Myanmar.

“Yesterday’s arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior civilian government officials signals an abandonment of the democratic process, one that risks plunging the country into dangerous uncertainty during a global pandemic,” said Green Party Leader Annamie Paul.

“Myanmar’s  transition to a democracy has been a fragile process, one that Canada and the world has supported and observed closely. Yesterday’s actions carried out by Myanmar’s military leaders directly undermine the country's transition and must be condemned in their own terms, even as we recall and abhor the government's shameful defence of the acts of genocide carried out against the Rohingya in Myanmar.

“Greens will be monitoring the situation. We join the government of Canada in calling for the immediate release of all civilians and a peaceful and democratic resolution of this situation.”
