The Green Party extends good wishes to the LGBTQ2S+ community for a Happy Pride Month

OTTAWA – June is Pride Month in Canada and the Green Party of Canada would like to extend its warmest wishes to members of LGBTQ2S+ communities across the country for a happy Pride season of festivals, gatherings and celebrations.

“Pride month is a great opportunity for Canadians to learn more about their LGBTQ2S+ neighbours and friends,” said Green Party Leader Annamie Paul. “This is a time to celebrate the queer community in Canada and to recognise how their incredible contributions and accomplishments continue to enrich the fabric of Canadian society in so many ways. I can't wait to participate in my community's Pride events."

The Green Party affirms that gender identity is each person’s individual experience of gender and that everyone has the right to define and freely express their gender, and that intersex people have the right to live with complete bodily autonomy.

“We also call on Health Minister Patty Hajdu to end the homophobic blood ban,” said Ms. Paul. “This ban is not based in science, and continues to stigmatize men who have sex with men as well as certain trans folks who have sex with men.

“We  know that the pandemic has been very hard on many members of the LGBTQ2S+ community. Greens will continue to advocate for increased funding for supports to community-based organisations offering targeted LGBTQ2S+ mental health and well-being programs, including suicide prevention, peer support, coming out, and counselling. Much has been accomplished, but more remains to be done.

“This month, let’s celebrate with our friends, family and loved ones who form part of Canada’s diverse LGBTQ2S+ communities. On behalf of all of us here at the Green Party, Happy Pride month!”
