Green Party statement on Islamophobic attack in London, Ontario

OTTAWA  – The Green Party of Canada joins the rest of Canada in grieving with all those that have been affected by the horrific Islamophobic attack in London, Ontario. Our thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones and the Muslim community who has suffered unspeakable loss.

« Hate has been on the rise in Canada,” said Green Party Leader Annamie Paul. “Islamophobia, anti-Asian hate, antisemitism, anti-Black hate, and LGBTQ2S+ discrimination among others have all increased in the past year.”

“Doctrines of racial and religious supremacy are an ongoing threat in Canada. It is the duty of our governments to identify, expose and root out supremacist movements and to ensure that those who promote and disseminate such ideologies know that there will be no safe place or dark corner where their beliefs will be allowed to flourish.

“Political leadership in Canada must also do their part by assiduously avoiding the dangerous exploitation of division. For while such exploitation may secure short-term political advantage, it ultimately undermines the long-term foundations of our democracy. Our responsibility must be to build cohesion within our society through seeking common ground, celebrating diverse identities, and discouraging polarisation.

“Hate cannot win, and every person in Canada must feel safe in their identity. Even as we mourn, we renew our commitment to working to make that a reality.”
