Statement by the Green Party for Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month

(OTTAWA) - January 2015 is Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month in Canada. The Green Party sympathizes with patients and families who have been impacted by this devastating disease.

“Alzheimer’s disease is one of the greatest causes of dependency and disability for seniors in Canada today,” said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Parliament for Saanich – Gulf Islands. “For those who have been afflicted by Alzheimer’s, no words are necessary to describe the tragedy that this illness presents.”

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia in Canada - Of the 750, 000 Canadians affected by dementia, approximately 500,000 cases are the result of Alzheimer’s disease.

The illness progresses in stages, negatively impacting memory recollection, communication, and decision-making skills.  Although some treatments and healthier lifestyle choices can reduce the risk of acquiring the illness and alleviate its symptoms, there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease.

The Green Party supports the policies put forward by the Alzheimer Society of Canada, which has called for the implementation of a National Dementia Strategy. The Green Party is hopeful that the Government of Canada and the provincial governments will work to implement the organization's proposals.

“I support the Alzheimer Society’s call for a National Dementia Strategy,” concluded Ms. May. “It’s clear that we need more research and greater support networks for family members who are looking after their loved ones.”
