Greens Call on Canada to Respect ICJ Decision and for an Arms Embargo

OTTAWA - On the recent International Court of Justice (ICJ) decision concerning the Application of the Genocide Convention in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel), the Green Party of Canada urges Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Government of Canada to:

Respect the ICJ Decision:

Acknowledge and respect the provisional measures outlined by the ICJ to address concerns related to the application of the Genocide Convention and the protection of the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip.

Call on Israel to Abide by the Decision:

Strongly encourage the State of Israel to abide by the ICJ decision and take immediate and effective measures to prevent actions falling within the scope of the Genocide Convention.

Enforce an Arms Embargo on Israel:

Advocate for an arms embargo on Israel to ensure compliance with international law and prevent the use of military force that may contribute to human rights violations in the Gaza Strip.

The Green Party of Canada remains committed to promoting peace, justice, and adherence to international law. It is essential that Canada takes a principled stance in upholding human rights, calls for the release of hostages and a negotiated ceasefire and works to support accountability efforts  for international erga omnes crimes.
